We explore the effect of the recent large unemployment shock in Spain on people’s beliefs about the role of effort as a determinant of economic position. To do that, we use a series of Spanish public opinion surveys between 2010 and 2017, matched with regional-level unemployment data.

About the Centre for Social Policy

The Centre for Social Policy Herman Deleeck (CSB) has been studying social inequality and wealth distribution in the welfare state for over 30 years. Our research is empirical and multidisciplinary in nature.

Herman Deleeck, who founded the Centre in 1972, fulfilled a pioneering role in developing social indicators for Flanders and Belgium.
